CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois State Police are urging people to pay attention to road conditions and to obey Scott’s Law after three troopers’ cars were hit Thursday, for the second time in two days.
According to Illinois State Police, one trooper vehicle was sideswiped by a semi near Urbana around 2 a.m. The squad car was stationary with its emergency lights activated. The trooper was heading to a crash on the right shoulder of Interstate 74 eastbound when it was struck.
Then, around 5:20 a.m. Thursday, a state trooper's car was rear-ended in New Lenox. The trooper was conducting traffic control for a tow truck in the right lane of Interstate 80 westbound near New Lenox. The marked vehicle was also stationary with its lights all activated. A driver failed to yield, slid on the roadway, and rear-ended it.
This case was a violation to Scott’s Law, the law that requires drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency vehicles.
“During inclement weather, obeying Scott’s Law is even more important,” stated ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly. “As the officers of the Illinois State Police (ISP) continue to put their lives on the line, we ask you, the motoring public, to help them out by Slowing Down and Moving Over while they do their jobs.”
The third crash happened at 10 a.m. Thursday near Muncie, in Central Illinois. A trooper was headed west on Interstate 74 near Muncie, Illinois, when a car, also headed west, rear-ended the trooper’s vehicle.
Road conditions were a factor, according to police, along with driving too fast for conditions.
None of the drivers or troopers was injured, but police vehicles were taken out of service.
Three other troopers’ cars were hit downstate on Wednesday.
