LOMBARD, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – Firefighters rescued at least 30 cats from a fire at Cat Guardians in Lombard Sunday night, village officials said.
Crews responded to the shelter in the 900 block of East St. Charles Road. The fire was under control by about 10 p.m.
Fire officials believe most of the cats have been accounted for, though they had not confirmed how many were inside the building.
People at the scene carried kennels and loaded them into vehicles as the rescue effort continued.
Lombard police assisted with traffic control, and village officials asked people to avoid the area while emergency crews worked.
Officials have not released information about the cats’ conditions, the extent of the damage or the fire’s cause.
