CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Violence interrupters were back in the South Loop Sunday night after dozens of teenagers took over an intersection Saturday night, and a boy was killed in a shooting.

Chicago Police said they arrested at least nine teens, the youngest being 14 years old, for disorderly conduct, assault and other charges after teens took over the streets near Roosevelt and Canal at around 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Peter Letsos leads security at the White Palace Grill and told CBS-2 they locked the doors during the melee.

"We were about safety of the employees, number one, safety of our customers and hopefully the safety of the people of Chicago," Letsos said.

Police said 17-year-old Jeremy Smith died after he was shot Saturday night. A 15-year-old boy was in good condition with a leg wound.

Officers arrested a suspect and recovered a gun.

Violence interrupters returned while Ald. Jason Ervin stressed the need for safe alternatives for teens.
