A landmark tree tied to Abe Lincoln has been destroyed

A living piece of Abraham Lincoln's history is gone, destroyed by the storms that swept through central Illinois Thursday night.

Known for being alive during former President Abraham Lincoln's time in the 1850s, the so-called "witness tree" stood at the corner of Eighth and Jackson Streets across from the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield.

A photo taken by X user Randy Wells following the severe weather shows the tree's canopy resting on the sidewalk, separated from it's trunk.

The tree would have been alive when Lincoln lived there from 1844 to 1861.

A National Park Service employee confirmed to Wells Friday that the tree cannot be saved.
