(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --An alliance of urban policy groups released a report Thursday that shows Latinos in the suburbs around Chicago are making great strides, and yet still lagging behind.

The report was issued by the Latino Policy Forum, the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Great Cities Institute.

More than half of all Latinos living in Illinois are in the municipalities and counties around Chicago.

"The majority of the growth happening in the state of Illinois among all population groups and Latinos is happening in suburbia," said Sylvia Puente, director of the Latino Policy Forum.

She also said there's been a significant increase in the number and percentage of Latino households making more than $75,000 per year, but Latinos also have the lowest per capita income among racial and ethnic groups.

Puente said it's a "paradox", because Latinos also have the largest percentage of workers earning $15 an hour or less.

"It's not a simple story and I think that's one of our major findings from this report is understanding the nuances and what it presents in terms of opportunities and challenges for the Latino community."
