CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As people celebrated Columbus Day, also known as Indigenous Peoples Day, the Abraham Lincoln monument in Lincoln Park sat vandalized on Monday.

The Abraham Lincoln Monument, located near the Chicago History Museum in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, was covered in spray painted messages.

One read: “Lincoln was an executioner.”

Chicago police taped off the graffiti-covered statue and sent an evidence technician to take photos of the crime scene.

Authorities said they are investigating, but for the moment it's unknown why the vandals chose the October holiday to make their statement.

No arrests have been made.
