CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - As Chicago police search for those responsible for a fatal shooting in Brighton Park Sunday, a challenger to Mayor Lori Lightfoot is criticizing the city’s response to illegal street takeovers.
Chicago police said someone fired 13 rounds into the crowd gathered at Kedzie and Archer to watch drivers drifting at around 4 a.m. as part of a caravan the department was monitoring.
15th Ward Alderman Ray Lopez said the phenomenon born out of boredom is causing mayhem.
“We have to remind the public that this is not a game. This is just no fun and games on the street. We are seeing gangs and criminality join into the drifting and the drag racing,” Lopez decried.
He called the drifting and street takeovers that were the backdrop for the shooting ‘unacceptable’.
“We should be looking for 200 suspects because everyone who participated last (Saturday) night is a criminal in my book. They’re an accessory to murder on the streets of Brighton Park and should be charged accordingly. That will send a message immediately that we’re taking this seriously,” Lopez said.
He said the city should not rely on passive measures to go after the roughly 100 cars police said were there when five men - all around the age of 20 - were shot, leaving three dead.
“We should be prepared to box them in, tow their cars and show that we have some accountability,” Lopez said.
Police did not recover any weapons at the scene and were looking for one to two shooting suspects.
