CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Reports that the Chicago Bears are floating the idea of building a new stadium on Chicago's Lakefront, just south of Soldier Field, understandably have at least one Alderman sounding favorable notes.
Freshman Ald. Lamont Robinson's 4th Ward includes Soldier Field. So, yes, he applauds the Bears organization for perhaps not abandoning the Lakefront. He said a new stadium could be a big win for the city.
"We want to keep the Bears in the city of Chicago," Robinson said. "Certainly, as the alderman of the 4th Ward, it would be important for me to keep the Bears in the city of Chicago. We have to think about the jobs, the revenue that comes into our city, and we certainly don't want to lose that."
The new plan, according to Crain's Chicago Business, would use the parking lot just South of Soldier Field.
Robinson said the Council and the mayor must protect the city taxpayers' interests, but he also applauds team's owners for apparently having their own plan for financing the stadium.
All of this is preliminary, including the financing. But reportedly taxpayer funding would not be required.
