CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indicted Alderwoman Carrie Austin says she’s not going to seek re-election, just as some City Council members seem prepared to map her out of her far South Side ward.
The just-revealed redistricting proposal from the City Council’s Rules Committee would leave 34th Ward Alderwoman Carrie Austin outside her own boundaries and she’s announced that she’s decided not to seek re-election.
The 72-year-old Austin has had serious health problems in recent years and now stands accused of taking bribes from a real estate developer.
Mayo Lori Lightfoot, however, was sympathetic. On a conference call from Washington, D.C., the mayor said she knew Austin was declining to run again as part of the redistricting process.
She also said she knows Austin has also been through "been through a hell of a lot" as she's gotten to know her.
"People will decide what her legacy is, but what I would say is she has been
a fierce fighter for her community."
The Mayor added that the allegations against Austin are nothing like the indictment against former Finance Committee chairman Edward Burke, whom she has urged to leave the Council.
