CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The City of Chicago and St. Sabina Catholic Church are hosting their annual gun buy-back program this Saturday. The event comes in the middle of a wave of gun violence in the city.
Standing outside St. Sabina at 78th Place and Racine Father Michael Pfleger urged people to take part.
"For parents, it's time for you to check your house. Check the rooms of your children and other members of your house," he said.
"Check the room to see if there are guns in there. If there are, get them and bring them in. For a young person, it's time to make the right decision. It's time to make a change."
Glen Brooks, the Director of Community Policing for the Police Department, answered critics who say these buy-back programs have no impact on gun violence.
"What we do know is this: once a gun is turned in, it can never ever be used to hurt or kill anybody."
The payout is $100 dollars for real guns, $10 for replicas or BB guns, and $200 for assault weapons.
"You get a hundred dollars-no questions asked, said Brooks. "We don't care where you have found that gun or where it came from. We care that you helped make our neighborhood safer. "
