(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A mail thief is believed to be on the loose in Palos Park.

Four mail collection boxes were tampered with outside the Palos Park Post Office. Police chief Joe Miller on Monday said there's no way of knowing how much mail is missing.

"It's a case that can be very difficult to investigate, particularly on a local level, and then even on a national level,” he said. “It's sort of a hit-and-miss type crime where they're getting information, they're committing the crime, and then they're off in the wind."

This case is part of a wider phenomenon of recent mail theft in the Chicago area -- from post offices and household mailboxes.

Miller said it's best to check with your financial institutions to determine if your information has been compromised.

"We're not sure what exactly was taken, we're guessing they were most likely looking for opportunities to steal someone's identity, alter checks, something of that nature,” he said.
