ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --An Arlington Heights man's effort to raise money for HIV/AIDS awareness ended up in tragedy.
Glen Brown was taking part in a 545 mile bike riding event from San Francisco to Los Angeles last weekend. He was just one block from the finish line when family members say his bike crashed and he was killed.
AIDS/LifeCycle, the non-profit organization that sponsored the event announced Brown's death in a facebook post.
Authorities in California haven't released many details about the June 11 crash, which remains under investigation. Brown's family members say they've received an outpouring of support from his fellow bike riders and the many friends he came to know over the years.
They say awareness of HIV/AIDS was a passionate cause for Brown. "We're just gutted," Janet Brown McCarthy, Brown's sister told the Daily Herald.
"It's just so unbelievable, but yet there's such a joy to know that he was so happy there and he felt so proud to finish and to fundraise this money. In that regard, it was a beautiful end for him."
