Voters in Aurora have approved a referendum question about recalling the mayor.
Aurora is in four counties.
Kane, DuPage, Will and Kendall.
And recall proponent Danny Souri was thrilled that a majority in each county voted yes.
“You, Aurora, you stood up and said accountability is what we demand,” he said in a video after the votes were counted. “For the first time in the history of the state of Illinois, a citizen-led referendum to have a recall mechanism be put in place for the office of a mayor has passed with a landslide.”
Recall opponents, including Mayor John Laesch, believe this will create chaos, endless campaigns and voter burnout.
“Effectively stripping the will of the people and replacing an elected mayor with a non-elected city manager,” Laesch said in his own video, before the votes were counted.
The Mayor noted that former Mayor Richard Irvin, who’s been a critic of his administration, backed the recall effort.
Opponents are challenging the constitutionality of the referendum question in the court system.
