(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The "Beagle Brigade" at Terminal 5 of O'Hare International Airport is credited with the discovery of 33 pounds of illegally imported meat.
Chalk up one for Olaf, a beagle with a nose for contraband and part of a team of beagles assisting the humans at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
"Our canines are trained to alert to any fruit or meat, pork, sausage," CBP spokesman Steve Bansbach said Wednesday.
The agency is putting the word out about Olaf's discovery in March: Nearly three dozen pounds of meat that a passenger was trying to bring in from Indonesia, via Tokyo.
To hide the smell, Bansbach said, the meat was covered with coffee grounds.
"But our canines are very well trained," he said. "Obviously, canines have a greater sense of smell."
The passenger received a warning about the meat, which was destroyed because it could potentially carry disease.
