CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago City Council Committees today will try to take steps that could resolve the budget stalemate with the Mayor's office or show how much distance remains between them.

The City Council Finance Committee is slated to vote on proposals for taxes and fees in the 2025 budget, and there's been no shortage of proposals, ideas and possible combinations meant to reduce or eliminate any property tax increase.

The Budget Committee is expected to consider amendments to Mayor Johnson's spending plans. Mayor Brandon Johnson said Monday he's encouraged.

“I feel really good about the collaborative efforts [of] the city council members who are showing up with ideas,” he said. “There are some ideas that some have presented that I don’t necessarily think is the best pathway forward, but what I can say is that this effort is ongoing, and I have a great deal of confidence in the members of city council who are showing up in this moment in very creative ways and very collaborative ways.”

What is the best plan for Chicago? The Mayor said it's one that invests in people and focuses on housing among other things.

“Clearly, there are a lot of human needs, and these human needs are rights…One of the other things that’s important about making sure we meet the human needs of individuals is that we don’t cut services and lay people off,” said Johnson.

After Committee meetings today, the full City Council is scheduled to meet Wednesday and Friday.
