(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Northwest Indiana oil refinery is admitting it was behind an odor that blanketed the region over the weekend, triggering complaints to first responders.
People as far away as Porter and LaPorte Counties were calling 9-1-1 Sunday to report a foul smell, sulfur-like, that permeated the air.
Some people thought it was natural gas, but NIPSCO said it wasn’t them.
Now, BP says there was an issue with its oil refinery in Whiting that caused the odor. A statement says that due to weather conditions late Saturday night, the refinery experienced a “operational disruption that triggered unplanned flaring.”
Crews are on site managing the situation, which was expected to be resolved Monday, the company said.
