CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- To ensure that people who recently died in Cook County and had no one to mourn them received dignified burials, county leaders and representatives of the Catholic Church teamed up for a special service at a cemetery on Chicago's Southwest Side.
The remains of 163 people who were indigent, unidentified or had no family to claim them, as well as 29 fetal remains, were buried during the ceremony at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Representatives of the Catholic Church and Cook County led the service, where County Board President Toni Preckwinkle spoke about the importance of the ceremony.
Catholic Cemeteries, the Archdiocese of Chicago and Cook County have been conducting such burial services since 2012.
