(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A southwest suburban decorating business hoped to generate sales and smiles with an election-related post on social media that some people appreciated and others didn't.

Powers Painting and Decorating in Plainfield jokingly suggested on Facebook that people who wanted to leave the country because of the outcome of the presidential race could hire the company to paint their homes to help increase the selling price.

Mike Powers, who owns the business, said it was meant to be funny, and most people responding to the post got that.

“I'd say 90% of people, you know, I just thought it was really clever. It kind of even brightened a lot of people's day up. Then you have 10% of people that maybe didn't like it so much. I guess you could say they were thinking that, oh, he must be on this side or he must be on that side.”

Powers said he was just trying to find a funny way to ease election-related tensions and draw some attention to his business.
