CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago is preparing for possibly thousands more migrants being bussed from Texas next month, just as the Democratic National Convention convenes.
Antonio Fernandez is CEO of Catholic Charities in San Antonio, Texas and used to hold a similar position in Chicago. He said migrants are being used as political tools, and that's wrong.
“There’s many not-for-profits in every city in the United States who are not helping anyone, and, for us in Catholic Charities, we help everybody, regardless of race, ethnic background or where they’re coming from,” Fernandez said. “We want to help people because people are people.”
Fernandez also said fewer immigrants have been arriving in Texas, but most who do still head north to places like Chicago.
He said private groups are stepping up to help migrants, and politics should never get in the way of kindness.
“There’s a lot of ways we need to help these people, and I know that Catholic Charities in Chicago, they do a great job,” Fernandez said. “At the location in Chicago, on LaSalle, they have showers…They give food every night to the homeless population.”
