(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago City Council on Wednesday rejected a hotly debated measure condemning violence against religious minorities in India.
The proposed resolution seemed simple enough. It praised Indian democracy but condemned violence and discrimination against religious minorities and some castes there.
Officials from the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his supporters lobbied hard against the measure.
During debate, some aldermen, like Jason Ervin of the 28th Ward, said there are more pressing issues facing Chicagoans.
“We have more than enough work in the city of Chicago if you want to talk about oppression, if you want to talk about racism,” he said.
But other aldermen invoked Martin Luther King Jr.’s adage that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. Still, the measure fells eight votes shy of passage.
