(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Ald. Pat Dowell is pivoting her political campaign from running for Illinois Secretary of State to the 1st District Congressional seat to be vacated by Bobby Rush.

The alderwoman on Wednesday said she can translate her experience working on behalf of 3rd Ward constituents to people in the South Side and south suburbs. She said she had to talk with her family about potentially spending a lot of time in the nation’s capitol.

“Washington is a whole other world, but it’s not a whole other business,” Dowell told WBBM Newsradio. “It’s about bringing resources and services to your constituents.”

She doesn’t live in the 1st District currently but would move there, she said.

Rush, 75, this week announced he will not seek a 16th term in Congress, setting off a scramble of hopefuls that may replace him. Rush said he would endorse a candidate.
