CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly 25 years after his death, there’ll be a remembrance Monday night marking the life of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, who led Chicago Catholics for more than a dozen years.

The event at Holy Name Cathedral will be attended by Catholics and people of other religious denominations, a reflection of Bernardin’s legacy that included the way he tried to nurture ecumenical and interreligious relationships.

Rabbi Wendi Geffen of North Shore Congregation Israel is scheduled to speak on that.

Bernardin was among those who set up a review board to deal with allegations of priest sex abuse of minors. At one time, he was wrongly accused by a former seminarian who later said he his allegations were not true. Bernardin forgave him.

Bernardin, who died of pancreatic cancer on Nov. 14, 1996, is also remembered for saying he wasn’t afraid to die.

He and other deceased bishops and priests will be remembered Tuesday at an All Souls’ Day Mass at the cathedral.
