CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The baseball is bad on Chicago’s South Side, but that hasn’t deterred a community of cyclists who call themselves the “Chicago Bike Sox” from enjoying some White Sox home games.
North Side resident Daniel Streicher started the group a few years ago.
“Every time I got to the racks, I was hot, and I wanted someone to be there with a beer for me,” Streicher told WBBM.
Now, Bike Sox events are a regular thing. The group has invited everyone to join them in biking to Tuesday White Sox home games, as well as some other games, and tailgate in the parking lot.
“People meet each other here; they network here; they get pulled into activism here; but we kind of intentionally decided that we were going to be more like a joy organization,” Streicher said.
It's not uncommon for dozens of people to join in and have a beer at the Guaranteed Rate Field bike racks. One of the recent participants, Daniela Dias, said she joined the group on accident — she went out for a bike ride, found her way to Guaranteed Rate Field and stopped by to check out the event.
“It’s now finally summer, so you finally get to go out,” Dias said. “I’m like, ‘I’ll go out.’ I had no idea that it would end up at the White Sox, and I haven’t been to a White Sox game in forever, so it’s just all meant to be true.”
