CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago aldermen had gladly given a preliminary green light to expand a community farming operation on Chicago’s West side.

The City Council’s Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs and Recreation has voted unanimously to approve funds for expansion of the Chicago Farmworks site in the 400 Block of North Kedzie.

Ald. Sophia King asked Farmworks Program Supervisor Josephine Mathias-Porter what will happen to the fruits and vegetable grown there.

Mathias-Porter said that the food grown there and at their other sites is sold to the Vital Bridges Food Program at Heartland Alliance.

She said the pantry buys the food wholesale and its participants get the food for free.

King was pleased with the response and approval quickly followed.
