Chicago will not host back-to-back Democratic National Conventions, following an announcement Thursday by party leaders.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and others hosted national party leaders back in May to make the case for bringing the DNC back to Chicago, after a 2024 nominating convention that the governor said was a big hit.

"The DNC delegates and guests loved being here," the governor told reporters during an event at the 360Chicago observation deck. During that same event, DNC chair Ken Martin said the 2024 convention at the United Center and McCormick Place was the party's most successful ever, and that he and his team were pleased to have the chance to consider Chicago's bid to run it back. "We are very grateful for Chicago's interest in hosting this historic moment once again," Martin said at the time.

But the DNC announced Thursday that it's narrowed its search down to three cities: Boston, Denver and Philadelphia. All three cities are run by Democratic mayors surrounded by suburbs that will be a major part of the party's push to re-take the White House.

That takes Chicago and Atlanta out of the conversation, but Chicago's still in the running to host the Democrats in 2032.
