(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A coalition of community groups and others have used a Halloween Party to encourage first-time voters to participate in next week's mid-term elections.
Organizations like Chicago Votes and Young Invincibles conducted a high-energy costume contest as part of what was essentially a Halloween "Get Out the Vote" rally for new voters.
A few hundred young people — several of them in Halloween costumes — were bussed to Olive-Harvey College to hear speakers like Rev. Janette Wilson of Rainbow-Push stress the importance of voting, and the power young people possess.
Kiah Sandler, development director for Chicago Votes, said this holiday, during early voting, is a perfect time to connect with the teenagers.
So, amid the costume contest and the pizza, the message was clear:
Rev. Wilson didn't tell anyone who or what issues to vote for but made them pledge to vote.
