(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago is an iconic shopping destination but now it's looking to make its mark in the fashion world. The city's streets will turn into a runway this fall for Chicago Fashion Week.

More than 50 events are scheduled between Oct. 9 - 20, including fashion shows, galas and marketplaces.

In announcing the event, self-proclaimed fashionista Mayor Brandon Johnson said the goal is to put Chicago on the map when it comes to high fashion.

“Let's make Chicago truly the fashion capital of the world, because we deserve to be the fashion capital of the world because we are the greatest freaking city in the world.”

The fashion week would also provide an opportunity to highlight some of the city's greatest fashion icons and up-and-coming artists.

“We have a vast collection of world class fashion designers, but unfortunately, they have not gotten the attention that they deserve, but that is about to change,” Johnson said.

Unlike other fashion weeks around the globe, most of Chicago's events will be open to the public and free. Events include fashion shows, galas and marketplaces.
