(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A suburban animal shelter that took in 100 beagles as part of a national rescue is going back for more.
Anderson Humane in South Elgin took a leap of faith when it offered to shelter 100 beagles taken from a Virginia breeding facility that was shut down. The facility had 4,000 beagles at the time.
Chief Operating Officer Dean Daubert recalls talking with rescuers about how many dogs his group could take. Twenty? Thirty?
“And we said, ‘Well, you know, we think that the community will get behind this. This is a unique situation. Let's take a hundred.’”
Anderson Humane’s largest transport ever paid off. Within 24 hours of arriving at the South Elgin facility, all the floppy-eared beagles had at least a temporary home.
"It was amazing. We probably had 50 volunteers here that night to get them fed and walked and ready for the next day where we gave them other vaccinations, micro-chipped them. And they all went into foster care that very next day,” Daubert said.
Most of the initial wave of beagles that arrived in South Elgin have been adopted, and the remaining few are spoken for.
With that kind of success, Anderson Humane decided to make another trip to Virginia.
“We're gonna take another 75 in a couple weeks here,” Daubert said.
