CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson welcomed Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama of Osaka, Japan, along with other Osaka officials, as they marked 50 years of the cities' sister-city partnership on Tuesday.
“Since 1973, we have shared friendship and cooperation with the Osaka Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, and both of our cities have been at the helm for this longstanding relationship,” Johnson said.
The two mayors also signed an agreement renewing the sister city partnership.
“On this occasion of signing the declaration to reaffirm sister city ties, I hope it can accelerate even greater exchanges moving forward,” Yokoyama said.
One of the notable exchanges between the two cities is their main boulevards — the Magnificent Mile in Chicago and the Midosuji Boulevard in Osaka — which have been “sister streets” since 2018.
The partnership was first signed in 1973.
“From then on, both cities have amassed meaning through exchanges in various fields, such as business, sports, culture, and social welfare,” he said.
Johnson said the ongoing partnership will lead to even more collaborations and exchanges.
“As we look forward to continuing exchanging our ideas for the future, I'm confident that the best days for our sister cities are in front of them,” he said.
Osaka is one of Chicago’s 29 sister cities.
