CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Park District is moving some of its programs from an Avondale Park while a fieldhouse is used to house migrants.
A Park District spokeswoman describes the relocation of spring programming as temporary in an email to WBBM. No word on how long this will last but the district said it has notified those who’ve registered and will be accommodated.
It’s part of the city’s efforts to offer space for asylum seekers and means children enrolled in after-school programs and summer camps at Brands Park will be attending them at other locations.
Earlier this week, Mayor Lightfoot wrote to Texas Governor Greg Abbott to stop the practice that she called “inhumane and dangerous”. Since August, Chicago has accepted 8,000 migrants, leaving many to sleep on floors of police stations.
