CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It’s like a library for books - but instead of books on the shelves, there are thousands of tools and now the Chicago Tool Library is getting ready to reopen at a larger location.

“Yeah, you sign up for a library card and we’re as close to free as possible, which means you pay what you want," said Tessa Vierk.

She co-founded the Chicago Tool Library just months before the pandemic began and now they’ve moved to West Garfield Park.

“Part of the motivation for our move was that there was a fellow tool non-profit called Chicago Community Tools, and while we - Tool Library - lends tools to individual borrowers, to average people, they were lending tools to aldermanic offices and non-profits and schools to do, like, big neighborhood cleanups and playground builds.”

Now Vierk said her Chicago Tool Library has absorbed the inventory of the other organization and there are 10,000 tools in all everything from screwdrivers on up.

The Chicago Tool Library opens its new, larger location on January 28.
