(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Thursday marked the end of a signature experience on the Magnificent Mile.

The building 875 N. Michigan Avenue – formerly the Hancock Tower -- is home no more to the Signature Room and its incomparable 360-degree views of the Chicago cityscape.

Operators of the restaurant and lounge, which was located on the 95th and 96th floors, taped a note to the interior glass doors and blamed the immediate closure on economic hardship from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For over 30 years, we had the privilege and honor of serving Chicagoans and visitors from all over the world,” the sign said.

Crain’s Chicago Business, which reported the shuttering, said brokers will try to sell the 26,168-square-foot restaurant space. The attempt comes at a challenging time for the once-tony North Michigan Avenue district, which has lost several high-end tenants in recent years.

"This is a real blow to Chicago," Izzy Kharasch of Hospitality Works told the Noon Business Hour on Thursday. "We've lost some of our longest and best restaurants over the last three years, and this was one of the last of the Chicago icons."
