(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Leaders in Cicero say despite having plenty of COVID-19 vaccine, far too few residents have been vaccinated.

Town spokesman Ray Hanania on Friday said only about 38% of Cicero residents 16 and older have received at least one dose of vaccine — compared to about 60% across Illinois.

Cicero officials are administering about 40 doses a day when they should be doing 200 or 250 daily, he said.

"We have a lot more vaccinations than individuals wanting vaccinations, and it's concerning to us," Hanania said.

He has a couple of theories about why some Cicero residents are reluctant: Some residents fear side effects, and some are immigrants and leery of government.

Cicero also is encouraging non-residents to come and get vaccinated at the town's health clinic.
