CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of summer’s most attractive events will be returning to Chicago this year -- sort of.

The Chicago Air and Water Show will not be taking place this year, but there will be new and reimagined air show events that take place August.

Instead of lasting five hours, the event will only last one hour and only the U.S. Navy Blue Angels will be performing. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels event will take place Aug. 21 and 22 from noon to 1 p.m. both days, with practice runs on Friday, Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The City of Chicago said the best viewing locations along the lakefront are between Oak Street and Fullerton Avenue. The mission of the Blue Angels is to showcase the teamwork and professionalism of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps through flight demonstrations and community outreach while inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country.

These free, new and reimagined air show events are part of Mayor Lightfoot’s “Open Chicago” initiative to safely and fully reopen the city. Updates and details will be posted throughout the summer at ChicagoAirandWaterShow.us.
