(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some local college students are off on a first-of-its-kind trip.

“It’s a cultural immersion experience for our students,” explains Akiza Boddie-Willis, a grants administrator at Malcolm X College.

She’s taking on the role of lead chaperone for City Colleges of Chicago’s “Reconnecting the Roots of Identity '' trip to South Africa.

“Hopefully, they’ll be inspired to take some of the things they’ve learned, come back here and become an impact for the communities that they live in and serve,” Boddie-Willis said Thursday.

Among the 14 students embarking on the first of five trips is father and son Mario and Miles Scott.

“I’m trying to learn more about who I am and the race of people that I came from,” the elder Scott tells WBBM Newsradio. “It’s amazing. It’s mind-blowing. I’ve secretly shed some tears.”

Organizers call the trip’s itinerary jam-packed.
