CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council has launched a study of a proposal for city government to take over the responsibility of plowing the sidewalks for Chicagoans, but the wait for a demonstration is way off.
Many city council members support the concept of the city plowing the sidewalks for the residents, but 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale said the reality is that it's probably a bad idea.
"We already don't have the resources to plow the streets in a timely manner when we get heavy snow. Now we're gonna tell people don't worry about...stay in your house. Don't worry about digging yourself out. The city is on the way."
However, 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Ramirez Rosa, Mayor Johnson Brandon Johnson's floor leader, said this is just a preliminary stage.
"The only thing this does is create a working group to have a conversation to figure out these issues with the hope that not this winter, but next winter, as we go into the winter of 2024, 2025 that we will be able to have a pilot program."
