The city of Chicago shut down a South Side towing company last month for operating without a license. But that didn’t stop the company from continuing operations and, to hear one man tell it, attempting to collect an insane amount of money for one tow.

The city ordered Flash Towing to shut down in late December.

About a week later, an Aurora-based company had an incident with a trailer in Chicago. The company's owner Sergiy Danylyuk told CBS 2 a driver for his company hit an overpass, damaging a trailer. Nobody called Flash Towing but the company showed up, Danylyuk said.

He said they agreed to tow the trailer to Aurora for about $800. But it was towed to the Flash yard at 97th Torrence, and he was told it would be towed to Aurora when he paid.

"$17,155. I was shocked, frustrated. I was thinking, 'How come? What did you do?'" Danylyuk said.

A leasing company that owns the trailer also got a bill — more than $37,000.

The city has since slapped a cease and desist order on the lot. The trailer and other vehicles in the company’s yard were moved to the city pound at 103rd and Doty.

There is now an investigation.
