Controversial Ald. Jim Gardiner wins reelection on good night for most incumbents

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ald. Jim Gardiner retained his seat representing the 45th Ward after beating challenger Megan Mathias.

Gardiner took 55.21% of the vote with all 29 precincts reporting, ahead of Mathias' 44.79% margin.

"This is not about proving our detractors wrong; it’s about proving our supporters right," Gardiner told supporters as reported by
Block Club Chicago.

A former firefighter, Gardiner was first elected in 2019. He has a history of controversy including lawsuits, investigations and accusations of mistreating critical constituents.

The 45th Ward on the Northwest Side covers parts of Old Irving Park, Portage Park, Jefferson Park, Gladstone Park and parts of Edgebrook, Wildwood and Norwood Park.

In other contested City Council races:

--In the 4th Ward, Lamont Robinson won 66.52% of the vote and defeated Prentice Butler.

--In the 5th Ward, Desmon Yancy won his race and will replace Ald. Leslie Hairston, who represented the ward for 24 years.

--In the 6th Ward, Pastor William Hall won his race over Richard Wooten with nearly 58% of the vote. Hall will replace retiring Ald. Roderick Sawyer.

--Peter Chico won his race to represent Chicago's Southeast Side 10th Ward after defeating Ana Guajardo with 59% of the vote. Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza has represented the ward since 2015.

--Ald. Nicole Lee (11th), an appointee of Mayor Lori Lightfoot, won her first full term by defeating challenger Tony Ciaravino, by a 62% to 38% margin.

--Community organizer Ronnie Mosley will replace Ald. Howard Brookins to represent Chicago's 21st Ward. Mosley defeated Cornell Dantzler with 52% of the vote.

--Ald. Monique Scott (24th) won reelection nearly one year after Mayor Lori Lightfoot appointed her to fill the vacancy created by her brother, Michael, who retired from serving the West Side ward.

--In the narrowest aldermanic race of the night, Ald. Chris Taliaferro's (29th) race against CB Johnson was too close to call, with Taliaferro leading by 186 votes separating the two candidates and 23 of 24 precincts reporting.

--Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th) held off a challenge from Leonor “Lori” Torres, by a margin of nearly 59% to 41%, respectively, with most precincts reporting.

--In the 30th Ward, Ruth Cruz, an administrator at Roosevelt University, will be replacing Ald. Ariel Reboyras. Cruz beat Jessica Gutierrez, daughter of former Congressman Luis Gutierrez with 51% of the vote. Gutierrez had nearly 49%.

--Ald. Gil Villegas (36th) won his reelection effort over Lori Torres Whitt with 58% of the vote from his Northwest Side ward. Villegas has served two terms on Chicago City Council.

--Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd), another Lightfoot appointee, will serve another term after defeating Brian Comer with 52% of the vote.

--In the 46th Ward, community organizer Angela Clay won the race to replace Ald. James Cappleman with 56% of the vote. Clay, a Democratic Socialist, defeated Kim Walz, who was backed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Jan Schakowsky and other prominent Democrats.

--Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth won the race to represent Chicago's 48th Ward on the North Side. With all precincts reporting, Manaa-Hoppenworth defeated Joe Dunne by about 600 votes and will replace Ald. Harry Osterman.
