(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cook County property tax bills will be hitting mailboxes any day now, and the Cook County treasurer says some people are going to be angry.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas says, overall, the median property tax bill across the County will rise by about 8%, but the increased tax burden isn’t shared equally. Many struggling, predominately African American neighborhoods are seeing taxes go down.

On the flip side,  she says, gentrifying Latino areas are seeing big increases. Activists and elected officials from gentrifying Latino neighborhoods like Pilsen and Little Village have feared that an influx of more affluent residents would drive up home prices and force working class people out.

Higher home prices mean higher taxes. One working class Latino community on the West Side saw a 46% increase. Affluent areas along the North Lakefront will also see dramatic jumps.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas says the tax bills in the mail now suggest the fears of gentrification are being realized. She says eight Latino Wards show property tax increases of between 15 and 23%. One West Side Latino community shows a 46% tax hike.
