(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County has buried 274 indigents at Mount Olivet Cemetery in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, and it was the first indigent burial to include COVID-19 victims.

Thirty-one people who died of coronavirus were part of the burial. The county waits about a year to see if remains will be claimed. If they are not, they are buried by the government.

“The people we’re here to honor were somebody,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said.

“They were mothers and fathers. They were sons and daughters. They were our friends and neighbors. Though their circumstances are all unique, today as members of the same community, we become their family.”

Also part of this burial were the remains of 48 unborn and two people whose identities are unknown.
