(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Plans for a new county hospital on the South Side have been put on hold — again.

It's the third time there's been a hold-up in plans to rebuild Provident Hospital.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said the latest delay is caused by rising construction costs and the need to ask the state for new authorization. The new hospital was estimated to cost $240 million, but the price tag likely has risen to more than $300 million.

County government will take the added time to look at how the healthcare landscape has changed and what the community's long-term needs are, Preckwinkle said.

When first proposed three years ago, the county envisioned an eight-story building that was 20% smaller than the current Provident Hospital.
