A 53-year-old Crest Hill man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for setting fire to his landlord’s home with 2 people inside.
According to Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow, Dion Ware, of Crest Hill, started renting a room in a single family home in Crest Hill in September 2021. He and his female landlord got into a dispute a few days later. She told him he'd have to leave if his conduct didn't change.
Glasgow said he threatened to burn the house down. Soon after, he said a friend of Ware's brought him two bottles filled with gasoline. He said the homeowner was sitting on her bed with a friend when Ware entered the room poured out the gas and set it on fire. The carpet and bed went up in flames is Ware was leaving. Both the homeowner and her friend managed to get out safely and then returned it put the fire out.
“Ware intentionally set a home ablaze knowing there were innocent people inside. His merciless conduct in purposely igniting gasoline in this home could easily have killed both victims, who fortunately escaped the flames through their own acts of bravery,” Glasgow said. “Today’s sentence protects the public from Ware’s malicious and uncontrolled rage.”
