(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Teachers Union President Jesse Sharkey has announced he will not seek re-election when his term ends in June.

Sharkey was elected vice president of the CTU in 2010 and led the union during a contentious struggle with district officials over COVID-19 and remote learning.

He said Wednesday he isn't leaving the union and plans to return to the classroom to teach:

"I will return to where my journey began: the classroom. I will do so with fondness for my time in leadership, because I had the joy and privilege of representing educators who care."
