ELMHURST (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Governor Ron DeSantis gave a tough-on-crime speech to local police union members in Elmhurst Monday afternoon that brought out plenty of supporters and protesters.
Fraternal Order of Police members cheered many of the potential presidential candidate’s comments about how he has banned Florida municipalities from defunding police departments.
“The reason why you have crime that has spiraled out of control in so many of these different areas is (be)cause you have politicians putting woke ideology ahead of public safety,” DeSantis told the crowd.
DeSantis claimed while crime is rising in places like Chicago, it’s at a 50 year low in his state.
“It’s not rocket science. It’s a difference in priorities. It’s a difference in leadership, and it’s enacting good policies that are actually designed to protect the public,” DeSantis said.
Congressman Darin LaHood and state senator Darren Bailey joined FOP members for the half-hour speech.
Jill, a former police detective from Lombard, was listening with skepticism.
“I’m definitely against almost all of his policies, but (I’m) just here for the process,” said Jill.
Before his speech at the Knights of Columbus, protesters jeered from across the street against his policies on the LGBTQ community, book bans and abortion.

“I don’t believe on his stance in anything, and I think anybody who that’s going to represent the United States should be a more encompassing human being,” said Barbara from Downers Grove.
