(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago-based Metropolitan Planning Council is thinking about getting from Point A to Point B and what the pandemic may have taught us.
Its webinar, "Where the Sidewalk Ends," looked at ways to make Chicago and the suburbs more walkable.
Among the findings shared Tuesday: Pedestrian fatalities have been on the increase.
“And despite the fact that much of 2020 was marked by a significant decrease in driving, we saw pedestrian fatalities spike in most places, nationwide and here in the Chicago region as well,” Jeremy Glover, a transportation associate with the not-for-profit said.
He moderated the webinar, which featured Lesle Honore of the advocacy group Elevated Chicago.
“We know that in Black and Brown communities, the way sidewalks are maintained are not the same as they are in more densely populated white communities,” Honore said.
Honore said going forward, we should listen to people in the neighborhoods.
“I think it’s about time that we stopped having conversations just at City Hall and we really started getting into the communities and asking their opinions.”
