(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — About 40 horses were rescued from a fire at a farm near Elgin, and a first responder credits the quick work of the farm's owner and workers with getting the animals to safety.

Jon Pollock of the South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District just got home from work Tuesday evening, when his father called to tell him about the barn fire at the farm next door on Nessler Road near Bowes Road.

Pollock ran over to help rescue the horses that were in a stable next to the burning barn.

He said he watched in amazement as the owner and workers calmed frightened horses and got them to safety.

“This is their passion. These horses to them are the world. They were able to get through those initial emotions and get the job done,” Pollock said.

The fire caused about a $1.5 million worth of damage to the farm, but Pollock said no people or horses were injured.
