(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois is co-sponsoring a bill meant to bring down the cost of insulin — the drug vital to many diabetics.
Duckworth said some patients spend $6,000 a year on insulin to treat their diabetes. She and Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, a fellow Democrat, are co-sponsoring a bill that would cap the out-of-pocket-costs at no more than $35 a month.
She tells WBBM Newsradio that insulin’s been around more than 100 years and it shouldn’t cost so much.
“This is not something new that somebody’s invested $100 million in developing. The pharmaceuticals are going to have to drop the cost of insulin,” Duckworth said Tuesday.
Right now, Duckworth said, here are only Democratic sponsors, but she believes there will be bipartisan support when it gets to the Senate floor.
