CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Helping those who have helped us was the theme at a news conference on Chicago's North Side Thursday- calling on action for refugees from Afghanistan.
Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky is a co-sponsor of the Afghan Adjustment Act, which allows certain evacuees to apply for permanent status, one year after the Taliban takeover.
"More than 70,000 Afghans were admitted to the United States after the collapse of Kabul and It was under a humanitarian parole, but that parole is temporary."
Schakowsky was among those who spoke at a gathering of the Refugee Action Network as well as Illinois Senator Dick Durbin.
"What would it say of this nation if we went to war begging people to join us in our cause and then abandon them on the battlefield, Durbin questioned."
He also said security is not an issue.
"We're doing all the vetting that is humanely possible. This is a false and phony issue that somehow these are would-be terrorists."
