(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A float down the DuPage River this weekend is designed to be more just a good time.
Ralph Osuch is organizing the first Rally on River, which aims to leave the river in better shape.
He has encouraged the more than 1,000 members of the Friends of the DuPage River Facebook group to get involved.
They want kayakers, tubers and others floating down the 28-mile river to pick up any trash they see.
Tom Merrion says he’ll be “magnet-fishing,” searching for metal on the river bottom. “Even though the river might look clean in a particular spot, I find screws and nails and all sorts of rusted junk.”
The group is reminding those who plan to participate not to enter on private property and to clean up after themselves.
More than 11,000 people have signed Osuch’s petition in support of public access to the DuPage and other rivers following a state supreme court decision this summer.
