(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Elgin police officer shot and wounded a man early Saturday morning after responding to a report of suicidal individual.
Officers arrived around 1:30 a.m. at a home on the 900 block of Oak Ridge Boulevard.
The 911 caller let the officer into the house and a statement from police said there was a 29-year-old man with “obvious wounds to his neck and torso.”
“When the officer attempted to provide assistance, the subject began struggling and then obtained a knife and began stabbing himself before turning his attention to the officer while still armed with the knife," according to the statement.
As the subject approached the officer, police said the officer discharged his firearm, wounding the man.
The officer administered first aid and the man was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is conducting an investigation.
Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley said body-camera video will be released when that’s completed.
